Overview

eCommerce systems like Hybris are often implemented as point solutions without fully appreciating the complexity of the core systems that ultimately need to be integrated.

This was the case for our client, who had been using Hybris for over five years and was still struggling with performance on all levels.

Hybris’ chronic performance issues were further impacted by a structural redesign of the client’s massive product catalog to make it more customer focused. The data transfer was at a near standstill—taking more than a year to migrate just 10% of the product catalog.

Although the client was working with an existing implementation vendor, they needed a partner with a more holistic view of eCommerce, content, product management and core system integration.

As content and commerce integration experts with extensive experience in Hybris, the client hired us to assess their existing systems to ensure that everything was being done according to best practices and identify where improvements could be made. They also needed help making the product catalog migration move faster.

Reducing integration complexity to improve speed, stability and performance

How Did We Help Them?

To start, we reviewed the following areas:

  • Integration architecture, methods and maintenance Systems
  • People and training
  • Data and content
  • Channels
  • Security policies and rules

Based on our assessment, we delivered an overall audit with a two-year roadmap that outlined 11 improvements prioritized by cost and business benefits.

These improvements ranged in scope from infrastructure changes to new integration methods (i.e., removing batch processing, leveraging native Hybris APIs, recommending IBM Cloud Pak as a coordinated integration platform) to departmental workflows that maintained product information integrity.

Additionally, we executed two high-priority improvements:

A catalog attribution redesign effort that changed the attribution model from an internal departmental view to a common set of product attributes.

A project that rapidly accelerated the product catalog migration, moving the final 2-3 million products within six months.

What Were The Final Outcomes?

Aside from establishing a two-year roadmap and accelerating the product catalog migration from ten years to six months, our architectural recommendations paved the way to significantly improve the speed, stability and performance of Hybris.

Our changes to product attributes improved organizational collaboration across the global organization and enhanced customer experience. By reducing integration complexity, we set the foundation for the client’s eCommerce solution to scale for future growth.
